It was a place of some importance by 912. The first reference to it occurs in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle where it is recorded: `This year died Ethered, alderman of Mercia, and King Edward took to London and to Oxford and to all the lands that thereunto belonged`. The King was Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, and from that time onwards the importance of his new possession steadily increased. The Romans had passed Oxford by, but with the coming of the Saxons it acquired a prestige which has never diminished. From then onwards it was in the forefront of English history and though it became overshadowed by the ever growing university it has remained a robust and, at times, a turbulent community.
