Like the 80s in general, they tend far more to a New Sensuousness. The 80s debate on architecture made the issue plain: Mies van der Rohe s slogan Less is more was countered with Robert Venturi s parodic Less is bore , and the imagination, hitherto in the chains of functionalism, was free to soar again. For a while, this was considered poor style. But many designers shrugged critism off, determined to put a categorical end to functional desolation.
